For several weekends this August, one of the central streets of Bielsko-Biała will have a rather different rhythm. Zamkowa Street will be closed to traffic and become a setting for concerts, dancing, family activities, workshops, sport and stories about the city.
Miejska Promenada Kultury is part of Bielsko-Biała's programme as Polish Capital of Culture 2026, bringing several of the city's cultural and recreational institutions together in an open-air programme designed for people to drop in, stay awhile and take part.
The events are free and take place on 8–9 August, 15–16 August, 22–23 August and 26–30 August.
The First Weekend Starts With the City's History
The opening Saturday, 8 August, begins with a walk rather than a stage.
At 10.00, local historian Piotr Kenig will lead a tour exploring the history of Żwirki i Wigury Square and the surrounding area. The walk needs to be booked in advance through Miejski Dom Kultury. Those unable to get a place on the first date can try for the repeat walk on 15 August at 10.00.
Later in the morning, the atmosphere changes. From 12.00, Zamkowa Street becomes a family recreation area organised by the Bielsko-Bialski Ośrodek Sportu i Rekreacji, with activities continuing until 16.00.
There will be Zumba sessions, including an intergenerational marathon, roller-skating demonstrations and competitions, balance-bike activities for children, pickleball and a range of fitness activities. Some activities require participants to bring their own equipment.
It is the kind of programme where different generations can find something to do at the same time, rather than having to choose between children's entertainment and activities for adults.
An Evening of Music and Dancing
By late afternoon, the focus turns towards music.
At 17.00, singer Andrzej Rybiński performs as part of the international senior event Spotkanie na granicy.
Then, from 20.00, the area around Teatr Polski takes on a distinctly vintage feel. The theatre's orchestra La Nostra Banda, led by Jacek Obstarczyk, will provide the music for an evening dedicated to swing and jazz.
The first of two planned dance evenings draws on the popular dance music of the first half of the 20th century. Visitors do not need to be experienced dancers. The idea is as much about enjoying the live performance and atmosphere as taking to the floor.
A Mosaic of the City
Sunday's programme turns the spotlight from performers to the people who live in Bielsko-Biała.
From 12.00 to 16.00, Miejski Dom Kultury will present Kolory naszych dzielnic, inviting residents to explore the city's neighbourhoods through art, crafts, performances and family activities.
The centrepiece will be a large collaborative mosaic representing Bielsko-Biała. Different tents will focus on different districts, drawing on their histories, traditions and distinctive identities.
Visitors can join collage and craft workshops, discover local stories through creative activities, listen to local performers or simply let younger family members take part in the games and animations.
The finished installation will be unveiled at the end of the afternoon, giving the project a distinctly communal character.
Music then returns to Zamkowa Street, with Bielsko-Biała's Psio Crew performing at 17.00.
Sunday evening brings another concert from Teatr Polski at 20.00. The Best of revisits songs associated with some of the major Polish artists featured in previous editions of the theatre's outdoor concerts, including Maria Koterbska, Krzysztof Krawczyk, Kora Jackowska, Romuald Lipko and Wojciech Młynarski.
A Different View of the City Centre
The programme continues across the rest of August, making Miejska Promenada Kultury one of the larger open-air cultural initiatives taking place in Bielsko-Biała during its year as Polish Capital of Culture.
Its setting is particularly fitting. Instead of keeping culture inside individual venues, the organisers are bringing it into the streets and creating space where residents, families and visitors can meet naturally.
For anyone spending time in the centre this August, Zamkowa Street will be worth adding to the itinerary, particularly on the weekends when the road gives way to music, movement and community activity.
Traffic Changes for the Opening Weekend
Zamkowa Street will be closed to traffic from 05.00 on Saturday 8 August until 05.00 on Monday 10 August, between Sukiennicza Street and the junction with Stojałowskiego/Wzgórze.
There will also be a closure on 1 Maja Street, between Sukiennicza Street and the entrance to Zamkowa Street. Sukiennicza, Stojałowskiego and Wzgórze streets are not included in the closure.
